Dr. Jesús O. Barreto Abrams is a trilingual (Spanish, American Sign Language, English) and multicultural licensed psychologist (PSY 33388) with a specialty in clinical neuropsychology. He prides himself in providing tailored, culturally responsive, and compassionate neuropsychological care and intervention to all his patients. He is also passionate about elevating the quality of consultations provided to schools and IEP teams via psychoeducational and independent educational evaluations (IEE). In addition, he enjoys providing consultation to attorneys and the courts about criminal and civil psychological and neuropsychological profiles.
Dr. Barreto Abrams’ expertise is in the evaluation of neurodevelopmental (e.g., intellectual disability, autism, learning disorders) and in provision of differential diagnosis pertaining to neurodegenerative disorders (e.g., Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson’s disease, frontotemporal dementias) in individuals who are monolingual Spanish-speaking or bilingual (English and Spanish speaking). In addition, he has specialized training and expertise in working with Deaf and hard of hearing individuals across the lifespan being able to provide services in ASL. His forensic expertise is in evaluating grave disability and providing opinions and recommendations for Lanterman-Petris-Short (LPS) and Murphy conservatorships.
In addition to providing care to patients or providing consultations to educational and legal teams, Dr. Barreto Abrams also consults across the country. He is contracted with a major medical center in Las Vegas and Cleveland providing services in consultation regarding working with Spanish-speaking patients and with interpreters. He has also provided multiple presentations and didactics on cultural neuropsychology, working with interpreters, and forensic neuropsychology at local, national, and international conferences and universities. He has also taught over 50 courses in disabilities studies, psychology (e.g., cognitive, multicultural, introduction), and developmental sciences/early intervention and has taught interpreters about mental health interpreting across the nation via workshops and presentations.
Dr. Barreto Abrams holds memberships in multiple major organizations, including the American Psychological Association (APA), National Academy of Neuropsychology (NAN), Hispanic Neuropsychological Society (HNS), where he is the social justice and advocacy committee chair, and the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
